Tidal Wave

The Tidal Wave socks are finally done. Not that the pattern was that hard, it was just I got to knit them in little increments.

Unofficially they are known as the "Before Work" socks, since I did a great deal of the knitting of them in the twenty minutes between dropping child at H/S and sitting in the parking lot before going into work. Arriving at work 30 minutes early would show undue eagerness and a total lack of regard for upholding the reputation of state workers. Can't have that.

I had to finagle the pattern some, otherwise they would have been a touch too big around. Still and all, I moved the pattern into my favorites file. It was quick to knit, I really liked the wave effect, and I could change it without dire consequences. The calculations were easy enough for even the mathematically challenged. To me that makes it a winner. It is available for a free .pdf download from South West Trading Company. Tidal Wave Socks Pattern.

I'm going to try the pattern again with different color variations, I have a neat gray, navy and brown yarn in my stash that could look good all crumpled up in the wave pattern. I'm bored with self striping yarn and looking for things to do to make it a jumble rather than a stripe. I'll probably take the pattern and mutate it for a scarf or sleeve on a shirt. I also never cook the same thing the same way twice. You got a problem with that? Talk to the Obsfucation Gnome.

Yarn:

Cherry Tree Hill Supersock in Tropical Storm colorway.

Done on two circulars- Knit Picks fixed circulars 2.75mm.

Tidal Wave Pattern from SWTC.

Very Cool! Thanks for the link. I'll be putting this on my long list of knitting projects. With winter coming I am looking forward to all the yarn projects that I have lined up.

They are so you!?!?!?

NOT doing some of the knitting on "state time" shows a total lack of regard for the reputation of "state workers"!

I am so very impressed! I was going to knit you a scarf (really!) but I see that your skills are waaaay beyond mine. I guess I will have to just start a "muffler" for anonymous. snick, snick! I knit on state lunch time, have a ways to go to equal the rep of our beloved Anon.

Mayhaps "Knit" and "Purl" (the Western Knitting Gnomes) can supply "Knitwit" a fashionable, yet serviceable noose pattern?

Tracy, it's a good pattern. Have fun. I've got a few other socks in the works. Will post when they look like something. :)

But I'm not an old fogey state worker with the ability to quit anytime I want. Like Anon the Reckless.

I would help with a muffler for Anon. But I'm afraid his hot air would melt it...

Harrumph, it's a definite possibility. Gnomes are wily that way...

Constance,

I don't think I knew that you were a knitter. This appears to be your first post on the subject (at least it's the only one that comes up under the knitting label). Very interesting. I don't knit myself, but my wife does! Living in Fresno has kinda made it a bit tougher to stay knitting, but she's not letting up!

In case you're interested, she keeps a blog here: http://shetlandtrader.blogspot.com/. Lots of Shetland-related stuff on it, actually, as those are her roots and where her parents still live. Just thought I'd mention it.

David, I have some knitting related content near the beginning of my blogging- when I didn't tag. Interesting, my only post about knitting until now was back in Aug of 06. I just started knitting this past year. I love dyeing yarn, my friend likes spinning, so we make a good pair.

I found the Shetland Trader blog through other knitting blogs and Knitty, but didn't know it was your wife until you outed her on your blog. :) Her stuff is a bit over my head right now, but I love looking at it. Good inspiration for us newbie knitters!

Hey, I'm impressed! I knit, but socks are beyond me. (I was going to say "socks are rather over my head", but that gives a most peculiar mental image). I can never be bothered to get the heel the right shape. Jumpers (are they called sweaters in the US? Pullovers?) are more my thing. I love Aran knitting, but nowadays the winters aren't cold enough to justify wearing it :-(

Well, I can't knit so I have no idea how difficult or easy a pattern would be, but those look pretty. Like the colours, too.

Carla, I wouldn't be too impressed. I can't do sweaters because I am too impatient. Socks are prefect for the Attention Deficit. :) add lace or cables, and I can almost keep interested for an entire sock!

Gabriele, that's pretty much how I buy yarn. Ohh, pretty! Of course that means I end up with lots of yarn that doesn't neatly fit the patterns I have. Ah well, pretty colors rule!
