Fragment Friday - Unexpected Guests

A regular guest at the bird feeders.
Early week interloper under the bird feeders.
Neither chain or distance or physics will keep this squirrel from those tasty treats.
First snow and the sparrows gather to gobble down every last seed.
Hey, doves have to eat too.
Do you have any squirrel stories? Our bushy-tailed interloper only comes around once in a while, so I don't begrudge him a meal. Besides, watching him try and figure out how to get to the platform feeder was highly amusing. A for effort, and I'll put some peanuts out in case he comes back.

Unfortunately we are seeing more greys round here these days. Our native red squirrel is becoming extinct because of the introduction of greys which eat anything and carry a virus that kills reds too. Red squirrels are so cute -- much smaller and bushier tailed and a very lovely hazelnut colour. Whilst I like animals in general I really don't like seeing grey squirrels here.

Here on the river, the blue jays knock so much food to the ground from the feeders that the squirrels and chipmunks are eating very well and some of them may be candidates for a weight loss program gift certificate.

Oonah,
I can understand. I don't like one species pushing out another. I see it in birds, too. Squirrels are few and far between in our neighborhood. Too many dogs and cats around.

Anon,
So no more investing in Squirrel baffles? Soon they will be too fat to attempt getting on the feeders.

We have a ton of gray squirrels, with occasional white and black ones, running around our neighborhood. I put out some old bread a couple of days ago and it was snatched up within moments by a very cute, very fat squirrel who brought it all the way up the steps to our deck so he could eat it in front of the patio door and taunt our dogs. We have a few red squirrels and they are like the dachshunds of the squirrel order here: they are smaller and thus more aggressive. But fun to watch! These are great photos.

Kath,

This squirrel only shows up sporadically. I did buy some peanuts today, just in case. Shelled pieces so the birds can eat them if Mr. Squirrel doesn't reappear. Had chickadees this morning. I love them! So happy and will flit around my head upside down while I fill the feeders.

We have a squirrel who recently commandeered the owl box we set up in the backyard, and let me tell you, he looks like he has no plans to move out anytime soon! I've named him George Jefferson- "movin' on up!"

Ha! Squirrels, I tell you....
