Fragment Friday - The Blustery Edition

Winter visitor to the bird feeder, patiently waiting his turn.

1.  And.......here we are again, basking in the negative numbers. I stepped out the front door this morning to feed the birds and the wind sucked the breath right out of my chest, froze my fingers and ears in a jiffy. Trying to find the bright side and all I can come up with, is at least it's not as bad as New York.

2.  How do you handle the unrelenting cold? I like to bake bread, not only does the oven warm the upstairs, eventually I get to bite into a hot, crusty slice slathered with butter. (Yes I'm a butter person. Death to margarine!)  Going to attempt French bread this weekend, even have the baguette pans.

3.  In a fit of optimism I bought seeds for my garden. Standing before the display in the farm supply store I got an urge to plant and dig in the garden. Since the ground is still rock-like, I settled for packs of beans and squash, lettuce, cucumbers and herbs. Hurry, Spring!

4. What fuels your creativity? I find non-fiction books are a great jumping off place for my poetry and fiction. Something about all the facts and details that have a story hidden deep inside, waiting to burst out. Sort of like Alien, but with 80% less squick factor.

5.  My friend is trying to convince me to move to Arizona. She lists advantages like No Snow, and No Snow. But there is heat of the very hot variety. and the politics make me uncomfortable. The two advantages I see - Baseball! and I could have a fig tree...

Our winter is a failure again, at least in the places below 800 metres. I want snow and cold and I'd even take a blizzard to get that, but no, it's above zero and a mix of rain and sunshine.

I'm sure parts of the US would gladly send you some snow. I'm okay with the snow, it's the -20 degrees I object to...

Sweet birdie! Aww. We've had some nice below-zero mornings here, too, and my old dog, Ruby, was very displeased at the lack of morning walks on those days. She has her ways of showing us....But I handle unrelenting cold with good red wine and cooking whatever comes to mind. Today, it's chili.
Our optimism is sprouting beneath grow lights in the basement. We have an emerging crop of lettuce and another of basil and yet another of flat-leaf parsley. Our indoor herb garden is on its way!

I have never felt -20 We don't tend to have very very cold here but nor can we garantee any summer. You get seasons. we don't -- just weather that jerks us around warmish/ coldish/ bit warmerish/ windy/ breezy/ wettish/ very wet/ wetter/ damp/ warm/ very warm -- and that was just this week!

I got -20 in Sweden and loved it. Must be some polar bear in my family tree, besides the selkies. :-D

Oonah - at least it's not -50. Supposed to be minus 20, 25 tomorrow morning. I'm not thrilled.

Gabriele, you are welcome to all the negative numbers we have here!

I don't envy you the minus-20. It's amazing that little birds can even survive those temperatures; they must really appreciate your bird feeders.

Carla, the birds roost in the tree shrubs across the way, and I can hear them get excited when I step out the door to put food in the feeders. Hopefully, it helps them through the winter.
